Cave of Elijah the Prophet

Cave of Elijah - a grotto on Mount Carmel in Haifa, Israel, associated with the biblical prophet Elijah. According to tradition, Elijah (Elijah the Prophet) prayed in the grotto before challenging the priests of Baal on Mount Carmel, and hid there from Jezebel's wrath.

The Cave of Elijah is one of the most important religious sites in the Land of Israel.

Two grottoes on Mount Carmel in Haifa have historically been called "Elijah's Cave":

• this cave, just above the intersection of Allenby and Haganah Streets in Haifa, on Mount Carmel, about 40 m above sea level;

• the grotto under the altar of the main church of the Stella Maris Monastery, on top of Mount Carmel.

The Cave of Elijah the Prophet on Allenby Street has been a place of pilgrimage for Jews, Christians, Muslims and Druze for centuries. It is also known as El-Khidr (Arabic: ٱلْخَضِر‎) in Arabic. The cave beneath the altar of the main church of the Stella Maris monastery on top of Mount Carmel has also become a focal point for Christians.

Elijah's Cave can be reached either by bus (Metronite 1) along Allenby street or by the scenic path from the top of the mountain from Stella Maris Monastery.
